First Teachbad Survey: Please Help
Here’s what I would like to do. Eventually I would like to develop a survey of teacher satisfaction that will be answered by tens of thousands of teachers and former teachers and will be disseminated inter-galactically and change teaching forever, for the better.
I know that I skipped some steps just there and the details are lacking. But here is what we are doing now. I am experimenting with some new survey software. I put together a pretty meaningless survey that I am hoping you will complete now.
I just want to see how this works. In this version, you should be able to skip questions if you don’t want to answer. It should ask for no identifying information. Leave comments if you like to let me know how this worked with your system, if there were any glitches, or any other impressions you had about the…interface?….I don’t know. Was it annoying or OK?
As far as the questions here, they are mostly just off the top of my head and mean nothing. But, selfishly, there are a couple about good books and music. Someone noted on my Facebook page recently that the only music I have listed is a band that broke up in 1987. I need help.
So, here it is. Humor me. I will, of course, share the results with you in due time. I need 1000 responses. Send this around to your peeps.
Kindest regards,
Mr. Teachbad

I think we need a website like “Rate My Teacher” where teachers can submit feedback about specific school systems, administrations, and parent and student populations!
Yes! yes yes yes *please* do a rate my administrator/district/ whatever.
with star ratings! 5 stars = worst asshole possible and room for comments
(I took the survey but I’m so tired I didn’t bother to scrape around my memory for music or book titles Sorry)
Don’t feel bad about Husker Du being your band of choice. Most of the bands I listen to still date back to the 80s. There are few that are more recent but those can usually be counted on one hand. Unfortunately the Buggles were right, Video Killed the Radio Star.
That is WAY too good of an idea for it not to happen. Kind of like ratemyprofessors.com
I totally agree about ratemyschooldistrict/school/principal. It would be great. I have a lot of things I’d like to get off my chest.
Hey Teachbad,
What is going on with you? Just curious. Are you out of teaching forever? Are you going to get another teaching job?
That’s a great question. Thanks for asking.
I miss teaching in a pretty limited way. I miss the classroom, but I’m not dying to jump back in. I run into former students all the time and I miss it. But, to be perfectly honest, it’s pretty nice to not be teaching; which should not be a surprise
For right now I’m going to try to eek out a living as an education writer/teacher activist and proprietor of Mr. Teachbad’s Li’l Shop of Non-Traditional and/or Offensive Teacher Gifts and Accessories.
At present, the Li’l Shop has only one item. As awesome as it is, I will be adding two or three more in the next week or so. Be thinking about stocking stuffers for your department!

Hang in there teachbad. I think you are both too intelligent/free thinking to not be teaching right now, and too sane to want to go back to teaching, ever. I am thankful that you are continuing the fight at least. Good luck with your current ventures.
When I retired in June 2010 I thought I would never be able to do without teaching people in one form or another. I’ve been surprised to find that I don’t miss it a bit. Not admin or (most of) my colleages, or narrow curriculum, or crazy parents, or even the students. Color me amazed!
Write your screenplay & sell your story to Hollywood! AND–demand to play yourself.
HAS to be better than Bad Teacher (or, for that matter, Jack & Jill).
Went to see Jack/Jill with my 11 yr old. So much fart humor I felt like I was in my classroom.
random survey, but works…you may need to differentiate for some of us….
Hey the survey worked fine for me. Good idea! And I don’t blame you for not wanting to go back to teaching. I got non-renewed last year and it was the best feeling I’ve ever had!!! I dutifully looked for teaching jobs and secretly felt pretty disappointed when I got one and had to go back in the fall!!!
Let’s face it…you have to be pretty masochistic to enjoy teaching these days.
I taught for many Many MANY years and thought I would always do it . . . I loved teaching. Then the kids (and their parents)changed for the worse and admin apparently lost their minds and then a situation was set up that if I didn’t retire NOW my health insurance premiums would double (get rid of the dinosaurs). I went back a couple of times for tutoring groups and now I don’t want to ever go back again. Not working in education is FUN. Real teaching would also be fun, but I don’t see how to do that . . . It’s a new world . . .and not a brave one.
question – is there any way to set it up so that for particular questions, only one box can be checked? for example, i can choose all of the republican candidates listed, although technically only one will be nominated.
That’s exactly why I am doing this. I will fix that and thank you for telling me.

Hey here’s a story idea: Instructional Coaches or “TOSAs” (teacher on special assignment) who SUCK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG the instructional coaches at my school are even more useless than the administrators. This is no small feat considering the administrators don’t deal with curriculum, parents, students, discipline, or any other traditional administrator responsibilities. Aside from organizing one embarrassingly bad new teacher meeting each week I have no idea what they actually do.
I love this comment!! I don’t know what they do either, except make everyone else’s job a hassle with ‘meetings’. I’m going to write this into the current Birder Murder mystery I’m working on (it will be #5 in the series and out next September). I’ve had so many teachers read and enjoy the books because I base the teacher and administration interactions on my own experience back when I worked in a high school. We really do have the same experiences!
Your choice of roles is too limited to include a role like mine–state dept. of ed. staff–unless you only want teachers to respond. Are you familiar with the Teacher Working Conditions survey that’s available through the New Teacher Center? It’s been used in at least 12 states and shows strong correlations between a number of factors and student achievement. For instance, poor school leadership = lower student achievement. Best wishes on your undertaking!
